Number plates were first introduced in Britian in 1904. The first ever vehicle registration in London was A1. |
CURRENT SYSTEM
Local Region The local region that the car was first registered in. (AA)
Date ID This is based on the date of manufacture of the vehicle. (51)
Random The last three letters will be random to any vehicle, and can now include Z. (ABC)

PREFIX SYSTEM
The prefix system ran between August 1983 and August 2001 and replaced the suffix system. A year identifier appears at the beginning of the registration. |

SUFFFIX SYSTEM
Suffix registrations were launched in 1963. An extra letter was added at the end of the registration that changed anually. |

DATELESS SYSTEM
Dateless registrations were the first type of registrations. They started in 1903 as a local council identifier code followed by a random number. |
